Sunny Dog Turns 8!

Eight dogs and lots of humans showed up to help Sunny celebrate her 8th birthday!

The cat litter cake (for humans) created by Greg. It tasted much better than it looks! (recipe below)

The dog cake received a culinary seal of approval from all the poochies. (recipe below)

Litter Box Cake Recipe (Platz version)

1 German chocolate cake mix
1 white or vanilla cake mix
1 large pkg vanilla instant pudding mix, prepared
1 pkg vanilla sandwich cookies
green food coloring
3 - 4 small Tootsie Rolls®

1 new kitty litter pan
1 new pooper scooper (avoid the large scoopers if possible)

Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (13 x 9 inch pans).

Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.

Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix until completely colored. (Note: To save a big mess in the food processor, smash cookies in a heavy duty zip lock bag with hammer.)

When cakes are cooled to room temperature, cut each cake in half. Carefully remove 1/2 of each cake and lay side-by-side in the bottom of the (new!) kitty litter box. This will form a normal cake layer in the bottom of the litter box, with one half white and the other half chocolate. Crumble the remaining halves into a large bowl, toss with a little less than half the white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. Important: mix in the pudding gently, just to moisten the crumbled cakes. You don't want it too soggy.

Spread this mixture on top of the cake layer in the litter box.

Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top, forming a fairly thick layer of "litter" in the pan. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly on top of everything -- this is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.

Heat 3 - 4 Tootsie Rolls in the microwave until warm, but not melted. Shape them into kitty doo-doo and roll them in the layer of cookie crumbs, and place accordingly.

Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around for a truly disgusting effect! Feel free to serve cake with the pooper scooper!!
